China’s massive investment in R&D, economies of scale, industrial capacity and vertical integration is second to none in these sectors.
I honestly do not see a credible alternative. Just take the solar sector, China’s LONGI, Jinko, and Trina consistently lead in efficiency breakthroughs and they rapidly implement these efficiencies into production.
Regarding Japan, unfortunately it seems their pivot back towards fossil fuels closely align with the return of Trump in the White House.
If one decides to totally align one's policies with the US, in all areas...
In my opinion, Japan, like Germany, have not paid enogh for the tragedies they have inflicted before and during WWII. It is time they pay in full. And if only their politicians will also be held responsible and punished in some form.
Yeah, energy policy here is just weird, with a strong scent of bakumatsu.
Being cut to piece by Chinese PV manufacturers was not decided in Kasumigaseki, though, the Chinese are just damn good making these things cheaper, faster and better than anyone else. JP was just the last one to fall. EU and US fell long before.
PV installs are a decent 5-10 GW a year out here. But that can't be covered by domestic production, even including factories owned in SE Asia. So no hope of exporting, really. JP may have a hand for Perovskyte, but that will likely require some alliance with a cheap and high quality silicon PV supplier (dual or triple junctions), likely from China.
