Summing up 20 years of The Oriental Economist Report
The lead of the last issue (April 2017) and the first issue (March 1997)
For 20 years I served as editor of The Oriental Economist Report (TOE), which was originally published by Japan’s Toyo Keizai, a leading business weekly, and then became an independent newsletter in 2003. I still write for Toyo Keizai, but I ended TOE in 2017 in order to devote myself to researching and writing a book.
The attachment contains the lead of the very last issue, summing up what we got right and what we got wrong over 20 years, and it also contain the lead of the very first issue, so you can see our take on Japan and what we expected way back in 1997.
